Sea Urn - Turquoise and Gold
Dimensions: H: 15.5cms D: 10cms
Clay: Earthenware
Technique: Slip cast, hand thrown
Glaze: White, turquoise, aventurine, gold
Sculptural / Not Functional
Sea Urns were designed and developed in 2018 in my studio here on the Pembrokeshire coast as a development of Sea Globes.
Made from earthenware clay, with hand thrown lids and sculpted fronds with a resemblance to sea anemones each piece has a unique style of glazing.
This Sea Urn interprets the concept that urns used to carry precious spices across oceans and therefore became beautifully embellished precious objects in themselves. It has a striking gold lustre upper body and lid which has been applied during the final firing. The almost scenic glazing around the rim of the globe is finished in turquoise, blue and aventurine glazes being fused together at high temperature to create a beautiful focus between the white and gold.
The piece is initialled on the base.
