This large sculptural vessel has been created as part of the “Under the Sea” collection of work. The hand thrown conical form has a flat circular capping that opens to a hand thrown lip.
The piece is encrusted with crustacea and coastal flora that softens the industrial form. Inlaid across the top of the piece are grey lines that accentuate the lineal form.
Finished in a variety of white and off white glazes that graduate towards the lip with beautiful tones of soft denim blues and greys. During the final firing the rigours of multiple firing, a challenging form and complex glazing has resulted in crecks appearing in this piece that have been repaired and highlighted in gold leaf in the style of Kintsugi.
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as Kintsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique.
