Kintsugi Fine Bone China Sea Globe
Dimensions: H: 10cms D: 10cms
Clay: Fine bone china
Technique: Slip cast
Glaze: Grey, aventurine, platinum, gold
Sculptural / Functional
This beautiful fine bone china Sea Globe has been finished with a swirling grey glaze with deep grey marking and fused aventurine pockets to create a beautiful flowing movement around the globe. During the final firing platinum detailing has been added to the rim.
Made as a pair, during the final firing, this slightly lighter of the two globes created a crack and resulted in the piece breaking up. It is the first fine bone china Sea Globe I have repaired using this technique, mainly because usually if they break they tend to shatter. The result of the repair has created a stunning gold highlight against the grey tones and the platinum rim. The twin globe that has not received Kintsugi repair can be seen here:

The piece has been finished with platinum detailing on the rim and gold leaf highlighting the repairs in the style of Kintsugi on the external parts of the globe, whilst internally the damage is visible without being highlighted.
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as Kintsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum, a method similar to the maki-e technique.
PLEASE NOTE: This piece is a globe that has cracked during firing and intentionally repaired using the style of Kintsugi highlighting the repairs in gold leaf.
