Blue, turquoise, aventurine and gold Sea Globe
Dimensions: H: 10.5cms D: 10.5cms
Clay: Earthenware
Technique: Slip cast
Glaze: Turquoise, black, blue aventurine, grey and gold
Sculpture / Non Functional
Earthenware Sea Globes are fired many times to create complex glazing designs that have been abstractly inspired by the coastline where I live and work.
This stunning earthenware Sea Globe considers the relationship between the ocean and the coastal rock formations and has been inspired by the iron rich rock formations that glisten in the morning sun here along the Pembrokeshire coast.
Finished with panels of glazes fused together at high temperature the piece uses my unique technique developed in my studio to feather some of the glazes creating a beautiful variegated and cascading impression on the globe. Panels of turquoise and deep blue glazes contrast black, grey and adventurine tones. During the final firing gold detailing has been applied to the rim.
I complete very few Earthenware Sea Globes due to the success rate being low caused by the multiple firings and complex glazing designs. Each piece is unique and designed purely as a sculptural “objet d’art” and is not functional (i.e. should not be used as a vase).
Initialled on the base.
